Kitchen Tour: Easy, Breezy, Shaker style kitchen extension - An extension to the rear of the house Bristol turned a small, dark kitchen diner in the kind of light open kitchen, dining and living area most families aspire after. The kitchen now extends into the new extension, its enormous doubling of the island as a breakfast bar, with dining room that flows off and living space on one side. This generous, the L shaped footprint is now very much the heart of the house, but despite its size, the planning of a kitchen to fit perfectly and answer the needs of its owners have thrown a few challenges for designer Jane Denton sustainable kitchens.

"The owners have always wanted Shaker style cabinets," says designer Jane Denton. "They were also clear to see in pale stone surfaces. They wanted a very light feel to the space and chose the color for the cabinets from the beginning."
The extension starts here where the wallpaper starts. A retaining wall was removed here and a steel inserted above.

memory original owners was to include a very large pantry which incorporated a large fridge and freezer. "It was one of the two main challenges of the project," says Denton. "We tried all kinds of ideas, but just could not fit all that on the wall."
The solution was to include a sub-mounted freezer in the island. Now the wall ceiling to the floor of the cabinet contains a double larder (behind the first two doors on the left) and an integrated refrigerator

the owners specified a large island. " part of the brief was to include an oblong island, around 2.8m, "said Denton." in the end, we inserted that is 3.1m long. The r oom is very large, so it was easy to adapt and it does not seem out of place "
However, the generous size of the island have launched a second major challenge .: find a single work plan plate to adapt. "We had to ensure that we could get our hands on a 3.2m slab in stone the owners wanted," said Denton. "Fitting two parts create a join."

a usable space area sits on one side of the larder. "You can not build a pantry in the corner, that you'd be hard to open the doors, "said Denton. "We also wanted to adapt the low range cabinets and those needed to come around the space to flow."
This area now serves as a small breakfast room with a kettle. "It worked really well," she added.

range is perfectly nestled in the chimney with an integrated exhaust fan above. It was already in place in the original , small kitchen. "We has not touched this area," said Denton, "except to add a backsplash in the same material as the countertops." a pure oak fireplace was also installed above, providing display space.

the only wall unit is located at one end of the worktop space near the dining room. "The owners originally specified no cupboards at all," said Denton, "but as we moved forward through the project, we all felt the need of a little more storage to serve dining room. "

Oak was also used to line and define the breakfast bar island. Its integrated design retains its discreet appearance and slot beech stools neatly under the worktop when not in use.
The oak is a beautiful contrast with the pale colors. "We use a lot of oak," Denton said. "He just brings warmth to a plan, which is really useful in a kitchen mainly composed of pale colors."

The owners knew they wanted a Belfast sink. "A double one, too, if we could get that to fit," said Denton. Originally, they would not sink in the island. "It soon became clear that the overall design of the kitchen works best from a functional point of view, with the sink there, "she said. "Now you have the stove, sink and refrigerator while a small triangle."
