Room of the Week: A Extension Light, loft-style of a Victorian home - When the owners of this traditional Victorian terrace in Peckham, south London, moved, they had ambitious plans for this. "Our customers have a clear idea of the creation of an area of New York style industrial warehouse in a Victorian house in London," said John Norman, director of Mustard Architects, who worked on the project for more 'a year. kitchen and dining room at the rear of the property were originally much smaller, and felt dark and disconnected living spaces.
The new kitchen was designed by architects and Mustard announced handmade by a carpenter. It combines stained birch plywood cabinet fronts with stainless steel worktop, and has a built-in sink for a seamless finish that has a distinct urban-industrial look.
"We birch plywood stained used to create a tailored, textured finish," says Norman. "It is an easy material to work with and has simple yet elegant details."

Norman opted for exposed pipes as it enhances the industrial environment of space. "We used off-the-shelf rigid metal conduit, which the contractor installed on site," he said.
"Cooking is another important aspect for our clients and helped us look through various cooking options before they settle on a Falcon range and hood."

a glass roof was a key requirement of the clients' brief and part of the design from the start. "We had to work closely with the manufacturer to discuss how to integrate the new structure to the former, "says Norman.
customers wanted to expose the existing floor joists above the main kitchen area to create a ceiling feature interesting.
"We ran the idea by using oversized cutting crude wooden rafters for the lantern in supporting the extension," says Norman. " We could have used standard aluminum rafters, but they were not suitable because of their smooth finish and square. Instead, we specified raw wood to match the finish of the floor joists and oversized so they have become a strong element in space. "

The openings between each room have been expanded and kept free of all doors to allow as much light as possible to filter . It strikes a balance between modern, open living and traditional single rooms.

"There is an impressive sense of space and light that hits you when moving to the front of the house at the back . When in the dining area, you have a view of the garden, back in the living room, in front of the kitchen and into the sky, and at night, the stars, "he added.

The front parlor a simple change of furniture. "We closed off direct access to the living room before the corridor into a final destination, accessible from the middle of the house, and to improve the provision of furniture," says Norman.

the rear doors and windows were once white PVC double glazed units and a long way from what the customers want. They were replaced by low profile, Crittall steel frames in accordance with the industrial feel of the rest of the space.
